22nd Ezra Pound International Conference

Venice, Italy

June 26-29, 2007

The 22nd Ezra Pound International Conference will be held in Venice, the city with which Pound had deeper, more sustaining ties than with any other, from his first visit with his Aunt Frank in 1898 until his death in 1972. Venice is also the only city that plays a continuing role in The Cantos from Canto III through the final Drafts and Fragments. The site of the 2007 meeting will be the island of San Servolo and the host institution will be the University of Venice. In addition to walking tours of Venice itself, excursions are planned to islands in the lagoon (San Michele where Pound is buried, Murano, Burano, and Torcello), as well as to Verona, Sirmione, and Brunnenburg Castle.

The conference committee invites proposals for papers on any aspect of the meeting's theme, "Ends and Beginnings," derived from the passage in Canto 76 in which Pound recalls residing in Dorsoduro during Summer 1908:

       well, my window
looked out on the Squero where Ogni Santi
   meets San Trovaso
     things have ends and beginnings

This meeting will also commemorate the 99th anniversary of Pound's first collection of poetry, A Lume Spento, published in Venice in 1908.

Proposals may interpret or apply the theme of “Ends and Beginnings” in specific or broad terms, relating to any aspect of Pound's work and life: poetry, prose, translations, textual analysis, biography, comparative studies, literary or political influence, and/or historical matters. Proposals from postgraduate and younger scholars are particularly welcome.

If you are interested in giving a paper, send a synopsis of your proposal (about 250 words) to the Secretary. Presentations should be limited to 20 minutes delivery time, allowing time for discussion afterwards. To submit a proposal, or to be sure of receiving registration information and details about accommodations and excursions, please also write to the Secretary:
