Listening Diary Sample Entries

October 21
7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Movie: Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner
I got a movie from the video store. I began the movie as I was eating dinner. I watched the movie before and I enjoyed it so I decided to watch it again. This time I thought more about the English and I tried not to read the subtitles. After I finished watching it I played it again as I was cleaning up my room. I like to listen to the little girl in the movie. She is very easy to understand.

October 22
4:00 p.m. - ?
Movie: Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner
I played the "Field of Dreams" all day. I stayed in my apartment reading and doing homework. I didn't concentrate on the video but sometimes when the voices became louder because someone was angry I turned my attention to the video. After the scene became quiet again I went back to reading a magazine. One time Kevin Costner was speaking loudly so I turned to look at the TV. After watching for a few minutes I realized that his loud voice wasn't because he was angry but because he was very happy. I don't know exactly what he is saying but I can tell the difference between a happy loud voice and an angry loud voice.

October 23
11:30 p.m. - about 12:00?
Movie: Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner
I put in the video again after I took my bath. I listened a little as I was getting ready for bed. I went to bed with the video on. I think I listened for about thirty minutes before I fell asleep. I closed my eyes while I was listening. Even though I wasn't watching the TV, I could imagine the scene in my mind. I like to listen with my eyes closed because I can concentrate better.

October 24
2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Elvis Costello CD
I was getting a little tired of the "Field of Dreams," so today I decided to listen to an English CD. The CD is called Punch the Clock. My two favorite songs on the CD are "Everyday I write the book" and "Shipbuilding." I like the melodies in both of the songs. I sang along but I don't know what I am saying. I programmed my CD to play these two songs again and again. I decided to tape the songs on to a tape so that I could listen to it in my walkman.

October 25
8:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m.
I listened to the tape I made yesterday while going to school. This time I was concentrating a little. Yesterday I was reading a magazine as I was listening so I didn't think so much about the words but today I am only listening. I tried to understand the words of the chorus. I think I can understand some of the lines. When I go home today I am going to check if my thoughts are correct. The words to the songs are in the CD cover so I can look at the words.

Total Hours of listening this week:
about 15 hours
